Canine 1st Aid training is a must for Professional Dog Walkers
Canine 1st Aid training is a must for professional dog walkers, in fact it’s really useful for all dog guardians.
Dog walking is unregulated so you don’t actually require any qualifications to be a professional dog walker but Canine 1st Aid knowledge, along with understanding dog behaviour, should really be a minimum requirement (in my humble opinion). I’ve attended some excellent canine first aid courses over the years but the most recent one I did to refresh and brush up on my knowledge was online. I’d heard nothing but excellent things about the training provided by Sophie Bell from Animal Love Pet First Aid. After taking one of her courses – I can see why!
The Trainer
Sophie Bell has been working as a vet for more than ten years. She has a special interest in emergency and critical care and has an obvious passion for helping pet owners help their pets.
The Delivery
The online course is delivered via videos, images and slideshows. The quiz after each section means you can test your understanding. There is also a summary sheet to print off and keep.
Like any good online programme – Sophie’s is really thorough and delivered at a good pace.
Course Content
- Approaching Sick and Injured Dogs
- Performing Clinical Exam
- Signs of Pain
- Shock and Internal Bleeding
- Approach to Wounds
- Common Health Conditions
- Bandaging
- Toxins
- Seizures
- Pyometra
- Bloat and GDV
- Choking and CPR
Extras
There is a ‘how to’ section. How to –
- Clip Nails
- Clean Ears
- Apply Eye Drops
- Use Flea Spot On Treatments
Importantly, theres also a section on what to keep in your Canine First Aid Kit Bag. I always keep a first aid kit with me when I’m out working as a dog walker. Fortunately, I’ve never really needed anything other than to clean up the odd scrape or scratch and I hope I never have to. But I’m all about being prepared – just in case.
I’d highly recommend taking one of Sophie’s courses if you’re a dog owner or dog guardian in any capacity. Its no substitute for real advice and care from a vet but it will help you monitor your dogs health at home and spot signs something may be wrong. And of course, if the worst happens, you’ll know what to do in an emergency.
